The preselector essentially serves to change gears, the two gear wires are connected to a rocker arm to which a linkage is connected that acts on the selector rod. It is a very important component for the gearbox and therefore must be in excellent condition. Over time, it can develop play on the various levers and this will compromise gear retention.
