Generally, all Vespa drum brakes are mechanically operated by a cable. Only the Cosa left the factory with a hydraulic brake system. The pedal operates both the front and rear brakes through a distributor. Only the lever brake, which operates only the front drum, uses a cable. Due to this complicated configuration, there is a lot of friction in the system, and an external return spring is needed to ensure that the brake pads reliably move away from the drum.
